ELATE offers numerous grants and awards for travel, research, and publications.
All聽ELATE awards are presented at the 起点传媒Convention each year. Please follow the links below for detailed information on each award, criteria, and submission deadlines.
Geneva Smitherman Cultural Diversity Grant
This grant for first-time 起点传媒Annual Convention presenters offers up to two $500 awards who are members of groups historically underrepresented in 起点传媒and ELATE. Eligible 起点传媒members must submit an application for the 2026 grants by May 20, 2026.
James N. Britton Award
The James N. Britton Award for Inquiry within the English Language Arts encourages English Language Arts teacher development by promoting classroom-based research in which teachers at any level (preschool through university) raise questions about teaching and learning in their own teaching/learning settings. Nominations can be made by the author of the study or by any English Language Arts educator. The Britton Award is presented in odd-numbered years; the next award will be made in 2027. Nomination deadline: May 1, 2027
Early Career Presenter Scholarship
Six scholarships to attend NCTE鈥檚 Annual Convention are granted each year by ELATE to teachers who are in their first to fifth year of full-time classroom teaching and who present in an approved session at the 起点传媒Annual Convention. The award鈥攊ncluding complimentary convention registration鈥攊s also available to emeritus ELATE mentors who will be presenting in an approved session. Deadline: September 1, 2026
Janet Emig Award
The Janet Emig Award for Exemplary Scholarship in English Education recognizes an exceptional article for excellence in scholarship and educational leadership published in the聽ELATE journal English Education within the previous calendar year.
Graduate Student Research Award
The ELATE Graduate Student Research Award seeks to support graduate student research that contributes to and extends ELATE’s efforts to examine important issues in English education. While the parameters of the award are broad, we encourage research that examines current issues in the field and offers implications for multiple audiences. The award provides a maximum of $2,500 to support a specific research project conducted by a graduate student; in addition, $500 is provided to support travel to the 起点传媒Convention to present that research. Graduate students at the master’s and doctoral level are eligible; all applicants must be members of ELATE. Proposal deadline: August 8, 2026
Richard Meade Award
The Richard Meade Award for Research in English Language Arts Education recognizes published research-based work that promotes English Language Arts teacher development at any educational level and in any scope and setting. Nominations for this award can be made by any English Language Arts educator or by self-nomination. The Meade Award is presented in even-numbered years beginning in 2014; the next award will be made in 2026. Nomination deadline: May 1, 2026
James Moffett Memorial Award
The James Moffett Memorial Award for Teacher Research is a grant (usually $1000) offered by ELATE, in conjunction with the National Writing Project, to support teacher research projects that further the spirit and scholarship of James Moffett.

National Technology Leadership Fellowship Award
All 起点传媒members, especially ELATE members, are encouraged to nominate themselves or a colleague whose accepted 起点传媒Annual Convention proposal demonstrates cutting-edge and generative methods of integrating newer technologies into teacher education courses or workshops. In addition to teacher education faculty and graduate students, preK-12 teachers may also be nominated. The award provides an opportunity to present at the annual Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education (SITE) international conference. Nomination deadline: November 13, 2026, by 11:59 p.m. PT
Research Initiative
ELATE invites proposals for research projects that advance the work of the organization as articulated through our various position statements and sponsored publications. Research supported by this initiative contributes to and extends ELATE鈥檚 efforts to communicate what we know and believe about English education with many different audiences: state and federal policy makers, accreditation agencies, school/department administrators, researchers, teacher educators, practicing teachers and other education leaders. Up to four proposals, at a maximum of $2,500 each, will be funded. Proposal deadline: August 8, 2026
