Davidson College African-American Read In 2025: The Poetics of Our Existence - February 18, Spencer-Weinstein, 4PM-5:15PM - collage featuring Audre Lorde excerpt Poetry is Not A Luxury

The Office of Equity Compliance, in collaboration with the Black Student Coalition (BSC), is hosting the 2025 African American Read-In on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. at the Spencer-Weinstein Center for Community and Justice. Dinner will follow the program.

This year鈥檚 theme,聽“The Poetics of Our Existence,”聽is inspired by writer Audre Lorde鈥檚 powerful quote:聽鈥淧oetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence.鈥澛燨ur theme explores how Black writers use poetry and creative expressions鈥攂eyond traditional essays鈥攁s a form of resistance, identity affirmation,聽and a challenge to dominant academic structures.

Faculty, students, and staff are invited to participate as community presenters. You can share a 2-5-minute excerpt from poetry, speeches, stories, songs, or other works by African American, Afro-Caribbean, or Black authors and artists that connect with this theme. Or feel free to share an excerpt from any work by a Black creative. If you prefer to engage as a supportive community member, you’re welcome to attend, listen, reflect, and enjoy the presentations.
