Out of Darkness focuses on the lead-up to the New London School Disaster of 1937 and its aftermath. The author opens the book with the disaster and flashes back to the beginning of the 1936鈥�1937 school year. Naomi Vargas, a Mexican girl, and her twin half-siblings, who are white, move in with the twin鈥檚 father/her stepfather, Henry, right before her senior year of high school.
