Seventeen-year-old Greg S. Gaines has perfected the art of getting through high school without being noticed. He learned how to navigate Benson High School in Pittsburgh, PA using his system; he is friendly on a surface-level with every clique in the school, allowing him to remain virtually invisible. Greg鈥檚 only contact is with Earl, who he considers a co-worker and who he has known since kindergarten. Greg and Earl create films together鈥攐ver 40 of them by their senior year鈥攂ut no one at school knows this side of Greg. This all changes after Greg鈥檚 mother learns that his 鈥渁ccidental鈥� ex-girlfriend from Hebrew school in sixth grade, Rachel Kushner, has leukemia.
