Remodeling Your Approach to Assessment

If you missed Wednesday鈥檚 #NCTEonAir you can check it out here! Special thanks to and for sharing so many insights and ideas. of one of the many ways we鈥檙e using what we learn from the to rethink聽what assessment really entails. Summer is an important time for educators to relax and rejuvenate but after watching this you鈥檙e going to be eager to add remodel聽to that list.

Resources mentioned in this video:

Community Mapping

鈥淏y mapping the literacies in students’ cultural lives and intentionally working to situate those in the core of school-based practices, teachers allow the emotional and intellectual dimensions of literacy, which make assessment and instruction authentic and purposeful across contexts.鈥 鈥 Rosario Ordo帽ez-Jasis

Community Mapping Considerations:

  • Wonder: What are the resources? What are needs? Who has access to the resources and who does not? How does this information inform my understanding of my students and their families?
  • Enter the community with new lenses: Observe, interview, scout, tally. Gather anecdotal records. Record observations. Write reflections, journal, and blog.

Protocols for Discussing/Reflecting Upon Student Work

鈥淧rotocols help you bring in other people with new eyes to give feedback on what you鈥檙e seeing in student work. This can help you see beyond your own assumptions and biases.鈥 鈥 Kathryn Mitchell Pierce
