A Community Literacy Project

Literacy education advocacy isn’t always about politics. Sometimes it’s about starting a community literacy project right in your own backyard.聽We found this story by Christin Agee on when we asked what people聽were doing for . Christin is a certified reading specialist who has taught special education for over 10 years.

book pages in the shape of a heartI always use the quote “It takes a village to raise a child” to describe my mission.聽 Teachers, parents,聽and community members must all come together to help guide and support our children.

This month, I wanted to focus on spreading the word about the importance of reading daily, but I soon realized one of the most important pieces might be missing, the books. I read about a local nonprofit that collects books and distributes them to local schools and children in need, so I decided to have a book drive and donate all the books to the organization.

With the help of social media, I have been able to post daily messages about and about the book drive. As a tutor, I have also given parents handouts about reading at home daily.

My goal this month was to motivate our children to read more. I don’t want children to read because they have to read, I want them to be excited to get their hands on a new book.
