Antero Garcia Elected as Vice President of the National Council of Teachers of English

Garcia will take office during NCTE鈥檚 Annual Convention in November 2023.

June 9, 2023 (Champaign, IL)鈥Antero Garcia has been elected as the incoming Vice President of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Garcia is an associate professor in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. His research explores the possibilities of speculative imagination and healing in educational research. Prior to completing his PhD, Garcia was an English teacher at a public high school in South Central Los Angeles.聽

鈥淥ur profession is one that is built on a foundation of imagination and dreaming. We get the privilege of working alongside students and families, asking 鈥渨hat if?鈥 about the conditions of the world around us. These are joyful practices, and I am honored to be able to serve our National Council of Teachers of English in a moment that demands collective dreaming, advocacy, and healing.鈥

Garcia holds membership with NCTE, English Language Arts Teacher Educators (ELATE), and the 起点传媒Assembly of Research (NCTEAR) and currently serves on the editorial board for 起点传媒journal Research in the Teaching of English. He has served on the ELATE Executive Committee, is a former 起点传媒Research Forum Co-chair, and has held the 起点传媒Cultivating New Voices among Scholars of Color fellowship. Outside of NCTE, Garcia is a member of the American Education Research Association (AERA) and the Literacy Research Association (LRA) and holds several awards, including the LRA Early Career Award, Arthur Applebee Award for Excellence in Research on Literacy, Divergent Award for Excellence in 21st Century Literacies, and AERA Jan Hawkins Award.

Additionally, he has authored or edited more than a dozen books about the possibilities of literacies, play, and civics in transforming schooling in America. His recent books include All Around the Town: The School Bus as Educational Technology; Everyday Advocacy: Teachers Who Change the Literacy Narrative; and Civics for the World to Come: Committing to Democracy in Every Classroom.

Garcia will join the Presidential team that will include current 起点传媒President Mar铆a E. Fr谩nquiz, current President-Elect Rochelle (Shelley) Rodrigo, and current Vice President Tonya B. Perry. Garcia will take office in his official capacity during the 起点传媒Annual Convention in November 2023.
